  • Cabernet Franc of the Year - Hill of Tara

2021 Cabak Family Vineyard Cabernet Franc

I had the esteemed pleasure of tasting the 2021 Cabak Family Vineyard Cabernet Franc at the Sonoma Vintage Festival in September 2024—and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. Among over 50 wineries pouring that day, this stood out as the most compelling expression of a Bordeaux varietal. The nose was captivating, showcasing all the classic green, savory qualities I love in Cabernet Franc—fresh herbs, bell pepper, and earth—elegantly balanced by a whisper of blue fruit. On the palate, the integration was seamless and deep. More info here…

  • Pinot Noir of the Year - Joseph Swan

    2021 Saralees Vineyard Pinot Noir

Compared to the lighter, prettier 2019 vintage, this one is much darker, both in color and character. The nose drew me in with a nostalgic scent of faded dark rose, layered with rich red fruit—think cherry and raspberry, but with a moody, brooding edge. On the palate, the tannins are more noticeable than in past vintages, but still soft and graceful. The bright acidity keeps everything fresh and vibrant. It’s a beautifully balanced wine and a stunning reminder of what Saralee’s Vineyard is capable of. More info here…

  • Chardonnay of the Year - Auteur Winery

    2023 Durell Vineyard Chardonnay

The 2023 Durell Chardonnay is nothing short of captivating. From the first swirl, I was greeted by an invigorating blend of lemongrass, golden apple, and a touch of sweet tarragon—fresh, herbal, and utterly inviting. On the palate, it’s a beautiful dance of Anjou pear, creamy lemon custard, and the subtle minerality of wet river rock. The natural acidity is vibrant, giving the wine an energy that carries through to a long, textured finish.

  • Sauvignon Blanc of the Year - Toje

2023 Toje Sonoma Coast Sauvignon Blanc

Fermented with native yeast, this wine speaks of its coastal origins—there’s a distinct sense of place that shines through. On the nose, I was met with delicate honeysuckle and a lively burst of lemon zest, layered with white peach and a hint of limestone. The palate followed beautifully, unfolding flavors of honeydew melon and lychee, balanced by classic tropical notes. The finish is crisp and mineral-driven, with vibrant acidity that makes each sip feel fresh and energetic. A truly expressive and elegant wine. More info here…
